Bluegill (The Anglers Sweetheart)

Bluegill

Found in freshwater across North America, the pugnacious bluegill is adored by anglers for its willingness to bite. Bluegills are sometimes referred to as bream and range in colour from dark blue to yellow, The habitat that they reside in can influence their colour, for example in the clear water of a quarry they can be a more yellow colour.

Normally hand size they can grow up to 15 inches in length. They like to seek quite weedy water where they can feed and hide. They like shade during the hottest part of the day and will usually remain near some kind of cover because they are common prey for other fish, such as largemouth bass.

Bluegills are fun to catch and will fight with every once when hooked. When handling bluegill be cautious of their spiny dorsal fin they can deliver a painful stab. Which I know all too well.
