Walleye (Popular like a largemouth, toothy like a pike)

Walleye

Walleye are the largest member of the perch family, I refer to them as the toothy cousin of the perch. They are a torpedo shaped fish with big white eyes, a brownish-green colour with a white tip on the lower lobe of the tail. Walleyes have been known to reach 25 pounds, but anything bigger than 6 is considered a winner.

Walleye are usually found in schools and hang out around underwater structures and near drop offs they require a great deal of water, therefore they are rarely found in small lakes or ponds. They prefer clear water and rocky bottoms with water temperatures in the mid 60's.

The walleye is very light sensitive fish. Although they can be caught in shallow water, chances are it was done in low light conditions. They see much better in the dark.

Walleye are often the preferred fish where they are available. Their excellent taste probably explains why they command such a loyal following.
