Trying to hold a bass fish by its body is like trying to diaper a fussy baby. They can really squirm and also have spiny fins that can deliver nasty pricks. (Been there).
The best way to hold on and immobilize it is by grabbing the lower lip, depressing the tongue and lower lip as shown in the photograph above. This method works quite well and allows you to keep control of the fish.
